CounterPath Awarded Subsequent Patent to Enhance VoIP Call Handoff from Data or Wi-Fi Networks to Cellular Networks
Vancouver, BC, Canada — July 21, 2014
CounterPath Corporation (NASDAQ: CPAH) (TSX: CCV), a leading developer of award-winning desktop, tablet and mobile VoIP software products and solutions, today announced that it has been awarded patent No. US 8,737,351 from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Titled “Methods and systems for reducing MAC layer handoff latency in wireless networks”, this patent is concerned with improving latency issues when completing a handoff to a wireless network.
The primary benefit of this patent is that it enables CounterPath to implement technologies which significantly reduce the time taken to switch VoIP calls from Wi-Fi to mobile networks. The delay experienced by users of other solutions is sometimes so large that they believe the call has dropped. This patent covers the technology concerned with reducing that frustrating delay, enabling a more fluid, seamless call to proceed when mobile users transit between a Wi-Fi and mobile network.
“CounterPath offers the most comprehensive set of features available in a softphone client today,” said Donovan Jones, President and CEO of CounterPath. “This patent adds to CounterPath’s intellectual property portfolio and protects our partners and customers in the rapidly growing mobile and enterprise Over the Top (OTT) markets. When matched with CounterPath hosted gateway and provisioning solutions, it represents a firm commitment to improving the mobility options most requested by enterprise and consumer users today.”
